Introduction

Hello! My name is Megan Janzen, and I will be your instructor for the ARCHT-110 / ID-110 Architectural Drafting course.
Hand drafting is one of my passions and an art form that remains just as relevant today as it was before the innovations of CAD and 3-D virtual modeling. By learning the fundamentals of drafting, you gain the ability to clearly and effectively communicate design intent to both clients and construction teams-transforming ideas into livable spaces.
With a background in Interior Design, Art, and Entertainment, I have enjoyed exploring the world of design through many creative avenues. Community colleges like College of the Canyons offer invaluable opportunities for students as they begin pursuing their future careers, and I am truly looking forward to working with you this semester.
Course Description
This course provides students with foundational knowledge of architectural drafting and construction technology necessary to produce a set of working drawings for a small single-family residence. Instruction emphasizes clear communication through proper line weight, dimensional accuracy, and professional drafting conventions.
What to Expect in this Course
This course involves manual drafting using traditional tools such as pencils and paper. Assignments will introduce tools of the trade, including sketching and lettering techniques, and will culminate in the production of a drafted set of working drawings for a single-story wood-frame residence. Coursework will incorporate current drafting standards, the proper use of architectural terminology in callouts and notes, and the submission of a drawing set organized according to industry conventions.
Students should expect to dedicate an average of 9-10 hours per week to this course. Instruction includes live and prerecorded lecture videos, scheduled lab time for working on assignments, regular assessments, and homework. Individual work pace varies, so students are encouraged to allow sufficient time to keep up with all assignments based on their own processing and production habits. In-class desk critiques will be incorporated to encourage collaboration, reinforce techniques, and provide individualized feedback. Homework may include online videos, reading materials, discussion boards, quizzes, and the completion of drafting assignments submitted through Canvas.
This is a synchronous course which may be offered in an In-person, HyFlex, or Hybrid format, depending on the session. On the first scheduled date of the course, students must log into Canvas as early as possible at https://coc.instructure.com to review course materials and preview requirements of the session in which they are enrolled. Students must regularly check in to their Canvas Classroom, be prepared to participate in live class sessions, manage their workflow effectively, and complete assignments on time.
The HyFlex option for this course will consist of synchronous, scheduled meetings held on campus in a classroom. HyFlex students may attend in-person (on campus face-to-face) or via Zoom, depending on their preference.
Students must acquire all drafting supplies and materials within the first week. Those attending in-person may use classroom tools during lab time, will receive printed assignment handouts, and often benefit from direct peer interaction. Students attending via Zoom must join at the scheduled times through the Canvas Zoom link using a computer equipped with a webcam and reliable internet connection and are responsible for generating their own printouts prior to class. This class may require camera/video to be turned on during scheduled class time. Students joining via Zoom must also arrange an appropriately dedicated workspace which can accommodate large-format drafting assignments and are expected to actively participate for the full duration of each scheduled class meeting without interruption.
The goal of this course is for all students, regardless of attendance mode, to fully engage in scheduled meeting times and benefit from meaningful interaction with the instructor and their peers.
Any student who is absent during the first class meeting will be dropped to allow enrollment of students on the waitlist.
Types of Assessments
Student assessment will be based on online discussion boards, quizzes, drafting-related assignments and class participation.
